In one camp are traditional car lovers who say that machines are far more aggressive than necessary for Car detailing and should be avoided or minimally used. In the other camp are New Age types who think that when something can be done faster and better using machines, then it should only be done that way.

The best road to take is the middle ground.

There are some steps which do require the care and time that application by hand can do justice to, while there are some steps which are better carried out with the help of machines.

Now, precisely which machines are we talking about. They are of course the big and bad Car Polishing Machines. There is a whole army of them – Orbital, Rotary, Dual Action, Small Backing Plates, High RPM, Low RPM etc and plenty of brand names like Meguiars(a recent entrant), Makita, Festool, Bosch, Dewalt to name a few.

For beginners, Rotary Polishers are a big No. They are noisy, aggressive and if used improperly can just cut through the base coat layer. Beginners are well advised to stick with a Low RPM Dual Action Polisher.

For Experienced Professionals Rotary Polishers are the 1^st choice followed closely by Orbital Polishers. They also happen to be the most effective is used properly.

Whether to use machines or to go in for hand application depends on three basic factors –

a)      Condition of the Paint of the Car

b)      Skill Level of the person carrying out the polishing process

c)       Products and Tools available

If a), b) and C) are all a resounding Yes in terms of Bad Paint Condition, High Skill Level and Great products and tools available then Rotary it is, maybe even Orbital can be looked at.

Yes and No.

If we talk about simple things like applying a coat of wax or washing the car with a car shampoo, yes almost everybody can but when we get into esoteric topics like Paint Sealants and Car Polishing and Machine Compounding it is best to stay away if you are a newbie.

What as a Car Owner can I do if I am not an expert car detailer –

Plenty of things, nothing stops you from carrying out simple processes in order to keep your car looking good. The only things stopping you are hard work and patience. Smile Smile.

I have listed a few things which are easy and not time consuming but the effect on the car’s looks is noteworthy –

a)      Car Wax – Car Wax is the most underutilized product in the car care space, it is effective and as long as you are not using an astonishingly cheap or fake product, car wax would give you good results. Just apply, wait for it to dry and then simply wipe off, don’t worry too much about the tiny flecks of dry wax which would be stuck in the crevices of your car, normal running and driving of the car would simply make them fly off !!

b)      Car Shampoo – Always use a mild shampoo, and if possible do not use hard water for the wash as the car paint would be covered in hard water stains if a shampoo based car wash is done even a little regularly. Use a clean terry cloth and remember, you are not fighting to get the dirt off you are just helping the dirt come off. Let the shampoo do the work instead of you.

c)       Vacuum Cleaner – A Household Vacuum cleaner with a long enough nozzle can be used at home to get the dust and dirt out from the interiors of the car, it should be done once a month and will hardly take more than 15 minutes. Does it pay off, you bet. Please do not fight the machine just help the machine do the work, interpretation – Just point the machine at the right areas and the machine would do the needful.

The only caveat is that we are aiming for a “good enough” job, not perfection. As long as we keep that in mind, I am very sure anybody who follows the above steps would be a happy car owner.

Abrasives based Polishes which are cheap and local contain abrasive granules on the one hand scrape and instigate the car paint when used with a high powered polishing machines and on the other just strip a layer of paint off the car thus making the surface shiny as new paint is exposed.

Specialized Polishes which contain something called diminishing abrasive granules contain oils and when the car paint is polished using them on one hand the granules slowly diminish into nothing while being polished and buffed thus not harming the car paint unnecessarily and on the other hand the oils massage the car paint surface for an even and glossy finish.

A simpler way to understand this would be to run a car without engine oil, will it run, it will, will it run smoothly, not for long. Diminishing granules and oils do what engine oil does for an engine, they lubricate and polish the car paint with harming it one bit. The same is not true for majority of polishes available in the Indian car care Market.

When should one get a Car Polished

In an environment like Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, it should be done atleast twice in a year to keep the car looking spanking new, as far as a car is considered, exterior beauty is far more important, nobody cares what the insides of a car look like if the exteriors paint an uninviting picture. Pun Intended.

Whenever as a consumer we want to get car polishing done, we should ask the polisher what compound he is using and whether he even knows how safe or unsafe it is for the car paint, if he says that he has been using it for ages and it is good but he cannot answer basic questions related to a bit of science behind it just zip up your wallets and drive away, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The lure of a low price should not entice us to play havoc with our precious car’s looks, imagine for a sum less than 5000 Indian rupees we would be willing participants in a bet involving the well being and beauty of our vehicles which cost a large multiple of the cost of polishing.

Choose very carefully, make sure the person knows a bit about the process, not just the sales part but also the technical part, after all once a polishing mistake takes place the only remedy is a repainting job which apart from being very expensive also inconveniences the car owner.

After exhausting a week trying to figure out which is the best do it yourself way to keep a car in good condition we have realized it takes a standard 4 step process once a month to keep the car's looks in top shape -

Clean - You can use a Car Shampoo for this, and use a clean terry cloth

Detail - You can pick up Formula 1 products from the market, these are entry level products and easily avaiable in car markets

Detail and Polish - This is usually better done by professionals, but as DIY you can try Formula 1 products and I can assure you that even if you do it yourself the car would gleam and shine like a new bride 

Protect - Use Carnuaba Wax, formula 1 or Abro for this stage, jut wax the car slowly and after the wax dries off just take it off by using a clean terry cloth

If you do this by yourself, you would have a beautiful and shiny exterior and it would last for 3-4 months, the cost will be more than recovered by the compliments you will recieve 

PS - It is very important to use a clean terry cloth while doing anything on the car, a dirty rag only harms the paint and over time would leave light scratches all over the paint

Multibrand Service Centers which provide Car Polishing as an Add-On

Same category as above but please do check out their coupons and free break down service offers, when the time comes they go back on their word. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and these guys are no friends.

Detailing outfits which have great prices but normally use lower grade polishes and machines and their work quality is very questionable

The Snakes, they think the work is easy and they can manage it, that is great motivation for them but very wrong for the Car. Ask them a few insightful questions and their sales pitch breaks down faster than you can say “Fake”. They are JIT (Just in Time) Car Polishers, when they get an order then they think about how to fulfill it. And their work is just not sustainable, a few thousand for shine that lasts 15-20 days, no thank you.

Definitely not the cheapest but they are really good at what they do, there are a handful of them in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon and they take their work very seriously. They answer questions easily because they have taken the time out to deeply understand what needs to be done, how much improvement can be sought in the car’s appearance and how sustainable would their work be. Use top grade compounds and machines and never compromise on materials or work quality and the sustainability of their work is amazing. The Car would look showroom new and look that way for quite sometime

Does more harm than good mind you, what if you put an abrasive face mask and then looked fairer, you would look fairer but your skin would feel terrible.

Car Detailing for exteriors consists of cutting the paint and then glazing, sealing and waxing it to make the surface even shinier and scratch and imperfection free and it also ensures that the new shine lasts much longer.
